After a one day workshop offered to us by Sheffield Sharks, we invited nutritionist Hannah Bailey who works for B Braun to come and work with our children to show them healthy alternatives to fast/convenience food. A child from each class was chosen each week to work with Hannah. We chose mixed age groups to encourage quieter children to interact with others within their key stage. The children loved peeling and chopping and learning alternative ways to create favourite fast food classics. Encouragement gave the children the confidence to try new things and use their voice within a group to give an opinion or share their thoughts.
We have been very fortunate to have Lucy Carr working with us this year delivering an Asda healthy living workshop to a group of children in Y2. Over five weeks Lucy led workshops about seasonal fruit and veg, dairy products, bread tasting and food preparation. The children loved the tasting sessions and were very brave to try unfamiliar fruits and vegetables. We have loved having Lucy with us and are looking forward to inviting her again to work with the children and parents at Red Robin House.
A team from HSBC joined us again to get stuck into Phase 2 of the Red Robin garden. They worked extremely hard and in the freezing cold helped to transform the side garden from a pile of mud to an attractive produce display area. They also planted 22 Christmas trees. The plan is to give very class their own tree and invite them to decorate with solar lights/seasonal decorations etc. The class planters are also now all filled with compost and have been developed individually by each year group. A large amount of fruit and vegetables have been grown this year and the children have enjoyed picking and sampling the produce whilst visiting Red Robin House.
