Children’s University

At Arbourthorne Community Primary School, we work closely with Sheffield Children’s University to actively encourage and celebrate children’s participation in extracurricular activities. We recognise the huge importance and value of learning that takes place outside the classroom. These activities help children to develop the essential skills they need to succeed in their learning, their future careers and their lives.

Earning Credits

Children can earn Children’s University credits for activities that take place at lunchtime, after school, on the weekends or in the holidays. All of our sports after school clubs are registered Children’s University activities, along with many other activities which take place at our school.

Gold Awards!

Well Done Aleen on your Gold Award! We are proud of your achievement!

Our Children's University Trip

Having taken part in our Children's University medics after school club, a group of our children were invited to a celebration end event at Northern General Hospital. We spent the day as 'Aspiring Medics' and experienced a wide range of activities in the specialist facilities which are used to train the university medical students.
We were shown how to undertake observations on patients in a hospital ward and experienced being a GP and carrying out assessments and checks on patients. We carried out 6 week baby checks exactly as a GP would and learnt life saving first aid, including CPR and the heimlich manoeuvre.
Finally we were each given our own medical scrubs and headed into theatre, where we had the opportunity to try out keyhole surgery, using laparoscopic scopes!
We learnt so much about the medical profession, building on the skills and knowledge we had already gained from our medics after school club. We loved working with the medical students and came back to school feeling inspired about our possible future careers in medicine!

What skills and attributes does Children's University Develop?

Children are awarded at bronze, silver and gold level depending on the number of hours they participate in extra curricular activities

Learning Destinations

To earn credits away from school at a registered Learning Destination, children need a Passport to Learning. These are available from the school office.

There are hundreds of Learning Destinations including brownies, scouts, dance, sports, art and music clubs, museums, libraries and even farms! If your children already attend activities, check whether they are a Learning Destination here - Learning Destination List by subject - Sept 2021.pdf

If they are, don’t forget to take your Passport to Learning! If not, show them your Passport, tell them about Sheffield CU, and ask them to join! Sheffield Children’s University are always keen to add new Learning Destinations so if you would like to nominate a new one please click here - https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/form/schools-childcare/nominate-a-learning-destination-for-the-children-s-university

Awards Ceremonies

As children collect their credits for the activities they are taking part in, they will receive awards for reaching certain milestones.

Once children earn an award at Gold level, they are invited to attend a special awards ceremony at a prestigious Sheffield venue, such as City Hall. Any Silver and Bronze level awards children have earned are sent to school to be presented and celebrated here.

Sheffield Children’s University provides children and young people with the opportunity to:

  • Join in and have a go
  • Make friends
  • Learn new things
  • Do better at school
  • Develop life skills
  • Collect CU credits
  • Earn awards for doing the things they love

So make sure to get involved!
