Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our Vision

Our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion is rooted in our core values of Respect, Care and Voice. From the moment children join our school, they are taught that every individual is valued and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. These principles underpin our curriculum, relationships and daily practice, ensuring that inclusion is an integral part of school life.

An Inclusive and Representative Curriculum

We are committed to providing a curriculum that reflects the diverse world in which our children live. We regularly review curriculum content through an anti-racist and inclusive lens to ensure that children encounter a broad range of perspectives, experiences and achievements.

Significant individuals studied across the curriculum are carefully selected and clearly identified within curriculum maps for each year group. This ensures that children learn about people from a wide range of backgrounds and that protected characteristics are meaningfully represented throughout their learning.

Our curriculum is further strengthened through our PSHE programme, Jigsaw, and our Religious Education curriculum, which promote understanding, empathy, respect and appreciation of different beliefs, cultures and identities.

Enrichment and Community Partnerships

We enrich pupils' understanding of equality and diversity through a range of meaningful experiences and partnerships. These include engagement with organisations and initiatives such as:

  • Show Racism the Red Card
  • Black History Month
  • Refugee Week
  • Unbottled speakers and workshops
  • Visits and talks from speakers who share their lived experiences and diverse perspectives

These opportunities help pupils develop a deeper understanding of identity, belonging, fairness and social justice.

Developing Racial Literacy

We are proud to be part of a city that values inclusion and is named as a City of Sanctuary. As a school, we actively promote tolerance, compassion and understanding, helping children to appreciate the experiences of people from a wide range of backgrounds.

We work closely with Sheffield City Council and are members of the Anti-Racist Education Alliance Sheffield (AREAS). Through this partnership, we collaborate with educators and professionals across the city to advance race equality and develop racial literacy amongst staff, pupils and the wider school community.

Pupil Leadership

Pupil voice is central to our work. Children can apply to become Equality Champions, taking an active role in promoting inclusion, celebrating diversity and helping to shape initiatives across the school. Through leadership opportunities, pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility and become advocates for fairness, respect and belonging.

Impact

As a result of our work, pupils demonstrate respect for others, celebrate differences and show empathy towards people from a wide range of cultures, faiths and backgrounds. They understand the importance of equality and are developing the knowledge, confidence and values needed to contribute positively to an increasingly diverse society.

At Arbourthorne Community Primary School everyone belongs, everyone is valued and every voice matters.
